Queensland Coast - Australia

Had a day before friends arrived to go diving on the Great Barrier Reef.
Drove up the coast on the Cook Hwy north of Cairns.
A beautiful winding road that made me dizzy
and I was the driver!

A rainy windy day. This picture reflects the mood of the day.
Still great to get a few days away.

Many giant clams can be found in the waters of Australia.

Australia - Great Barrier Reef - Red Sea Fan

This red sea fan is in about 90 feet of water.

I caught a diver passing by in about 25 feet above the fan.

A clear, peaceful and calm morning dive.

AUSTRALIA - Great Barrier Reef - Scorpion Fish

Juvenile Scorpion Fish on the Australian reef.
He was about 8 cm or 3 inches long.

You do not want to bump into this fellow when he grows up.
Very toxic sting. Might not kill you but would ruin your day.

Australian - Great Barrier Reef - Bat Fish

We call this a Spade fish in the Atlantic Ocean.
They are called Bat fish in the Pacific Ocean areas.

You would think fish would be clean all the time since they live in water.

In reality they are being constantly cleaned by a variety of small fish.
The small fish remove parasites from the larger fish.

It is not uncommon to see the cleaning fish inside the mouth and gills of larger fish.

Australia - Great Barrier Reef - Nudibranch

We only found 19 variations of Nudibranch on the Australia GBR Trip.
All are Nudibranchs in the picture except the in top right corner I included a flatworm.

3,000 variations exist around the world of these Sea Slug or Sea Snails.

The common group name is Nudibranchia
Phonetic sound is "noo-duh-brangk"

Australia - Great Barrier Reef - White Tip Shark

The tips of the dorsal fin are white on this shark.
The sharks a very calm and you find them sleeping on the bottom.

They usually only move if disturbed or eating.

I had just disturbed this young fellow and he circled overhead
waiting for me to leave his resting area.

Australia - Great Barrier Reef - Anemone and False Clown Fish

I have taken 100's of pictures of Anemone fish. I liked the Sea Anemone in which this fish is hiding.

What is a Sea Anemone that most people mistake for a plant?

Sea Anemones are a group of water dwelling, predatory animals of the order Actiniaria; they are named after the anemone, a terrestrial flower. As cnidarians, sea anemones are closely related to corals & jellyfish. They have long tentacles that catches their prey (very small things).

The Sea Anemone in this picture has white bulb ends with a green nipple topped off with a purple spot. Not a common color scheme.

What adds to the confusion is we call the fish that hide among the Sea Anemone's
tentacles an "Anemone Fish". There are many type of Anemone fish with specific names most of us cannot remember.

The most famous is the "Clown Anemone fish" from the Walt Disney movie.
The fish have names as Clarks, Pink, Tomato etc.

Lynnhaven Fishing Pier - Damaged last November

The pier was damaged by a Northeaster last fall 11/12/2009.
This is the first chance I had to take pictures from the water.

They are starting to repair it now.

I bought a bench with my fathers name etched on the back as a memorial.
He loved that old pier. It was a hang-out for him when he was younger.

He was a friend of "Old Man Cashman". Mr. Cashman's daughter Bobbie now owns the pier.

Jerry Harris Original - Blue Heron and White Egret

A Buddy from the gym asked if I would take a picture of
his carvings. As usual I have to try all types of back grounds, lights etc.

It was a lot of fun and a chance to work with some new material.

Jerry does a great job. A major effort keeping the depth, the white egret and bases all looking correct
and exposed correctly. A lot of nice detail in those carvings.

As my mentor said about the picture .... "Almost there!"
I ran out of time.
Next set of pictures will look better Jerry.
